Being Mortal shows that the ultimate goal is not a good death but a good life – all the way to the very end. How can we make our last days more comfortable, meaningful, and affordable? The medicalization of mortality is most apparent at the very end of life, when the American health system spends billions of dollars on aggressive and often futile interventions that make patients miserable and keep them apart from loved ones. How can we navigate end-of-life issues for ourselves and for our loved ones? The author, Atul Gawande, is a Boston surgeon and a writer for the The New Yorker.
