13 Feb Choices and Possibilities at the End of Life
Who Would You Trust to Speak for You?
Advance care planning is not just about old age.
There is a growing movement in our culture, with the baby boomer generation in particular, to be prepared for what lies ahead. Many people have a hard time talking about end-of-life issues. It’s far easier to plan for births, graduations, weddings, vacations, etc. Many adult children of aging parents and upcoming retirees are recognizing that increased knowledge and forethought can improve the journey of this stage of life.
The fact is, at any age a medical emergency could leave you too ill to make your own health care decisions. Ideally, everyone of legal age would have discussed personal values and wishes long before a medical crisis occurs. Advance care planning is not just about old age. When does anyone have time and energy for this subject in the midst of their busy lives?
Brattleboro Area Hospice is sponsoring a free interactive workshop series to provide an opportunity for lively conversation and gentle planning. It has been shown that people live longer and loved ones do better when end-of-life wishes have been discussed and documented in advance.
This workshop series will be led by Joanna Rueter, MSW, Advanced Care Planning Coach, trained hospice volunteer and the owner of Sustainable Aging® (www. Sustainable Aging.com). It will be held at The Gathering Place, 30 Terrace Street, March 6 and March 20th 6:30- 8:30 pm. To register call Joyce Drew at 802-257-0775.
