Charitable Gift Annuities, Charitable Remainder Trusts and Charitable Lead Trusts

Brattleboro Area Hospice partners with the Vermont Community Foundation to provide life income gifts to our donors. We are delighted with this partnership, making it possible for us to offer the expertise and professionalism of Vermont Community Foundation to our friends and supporters.

Charitable Gift Annuities

A contract between the donor and Brattleboro Area Hospice that gives the donor a tax–advantaged way to receive income during their lifetime while supporting Brattleboro Area Hospice’s mission in the future. These gifts are irrevocable and as such the donor receives a tax deduction immediately, adjusted based on the income the donor is receiving.

The donor makes a gift to Brattleboro Area Hospice and in return receives a fixed annual income, either for life or for the term of the annuity. The Vermont Community Foundation manages the gift fund and guarantees the stipulated payment to the donor (and, if designed this way, for the donor’s beneficiary). In the end, the organization receives the funds remaining in the annuity. Donors can contribute incremental amounts to the annuity, repeating gifts as many times as they like, increasing their income.

What to do next: Consult with a financial advisor or legal counsel. If considering the gift of an annuity please call the Development Director at 802-257-0775 ext. 109. We will schedule a meeting with a representative of the Vermont Community Foundation.

Trusts

Through a Trust, you can simultaneously benefit one or more nonprofit organizations and yourself or your family. There are two financial beneficiaries in Trusts: current income and the “remainder” which is left over after the income payments are completed. You must work with an accountant and/or an attorney to set up a trust, as it is a separate entity, like a corporation, standing between you and the organization. Trusts are irrevocable gifts, and so they may offer tax deductions.

Charitable Remainder Trusts

A separately invested and managed trust that pays a percentage of principal, revalued annually to the donor or other beneficiaries for a specified term of years after which the remainder is distributed to Brattleboro Area Hospice.

Charitable Lead Trusts

Brattleboro Area Hospice receives income generated by the trust for the defined term of the trust. Upon termination of the trust the assets revert to the assigned beneficiaries.

What to do next: Consult with a financial advisor or legal counsel. If considering the establishment of a remainder or lead trust, please call the Development Director at 802-257-0775 ext. 109.  We will schedule a meeting with a representative of the Vermont Community Foundation to discuss your wishes further.

We would be happy to meet with you to further discuss your hopes for leaving a legacy.  Please call the office at 802-257-0775 to schedule an appointment with the Development Director.

Thank you!
